Rev. Br. Fidelis Mammoottil OCD of St. Lawrence, expired on 8th August 2004 in Bengaluru and was buried at Carmel Hill Monastery, Thiruvananthapuram. He was the son of Mathew Mammoottil and Mariam M.C. Varghese, born on 7th April, 1914, at Puthenpeedika in the Syro-Malankara Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram. In 1932, at the age of 18, he joined our Order at Carmel Hill Monastery, Thiruvananthapuram, taking the new name Br. Fidelis Mammoottil OCD of St. Lawrence. On 20th August, 1934, he made his Simple Profession and made his Solemn Profession on 20th August, 1937.
Rev. Br. Fidelis served the Malabar Province in many ways – Assistant tailor, Shoe maker, Tailor, Refectarian and Infirmarian. His major services to the Province was – Assistant Manager of St. Joseph’s Press from 1948 to 1959; Manager from 1959 and 1981. During his period of office, St. Joseph’s Press was brought to the prestigious position it holds today.
Besides being conventual at Carmel Hill, he was also conventual at St. Elias’ Monastery, Thuckalay from 1934 to 1939 and again from 1947 to 1948. He was also in the Mission at Hoshiarpur from 1987 to 1994. From 1994, Br. Fidelis had been a member of the Community at St. Joseph’s Monastery, Bengaluru.
As a religious, he led an exemplary life where prayer, silence and work harmoniously mingled. As long as his health allowed him, Br. Fidelis was very regular for every community act and infact, for many years, he was always present in the Morning Community prayer in the Choir, before everyone else.
Dead or Alive, they bring us great blessing!
While living with us they walked with us giving us life and light!
After leaving us all, they intercede for us in Heaven!!
