REV. BR. GERARD KUNNUMPURATH OCD OF MARY IMMACULATE

(13-12-1913 to 25-11-1982)

Rev. Br. Gerard Kunnumpurath OCD of Mary Immaculate slept in the Lord on 25^th November, 1982, at the age of 69 in 48^th year of his Profession.

Thomas Kunnumpurath was born on 13^th December, 1913, at Thambalakkad, in the Changanacherry Diocese (now belongs to Kanjirappally Diocese). Joseph Kunnumpurath and Elizabeth were his parents. He joined in our Order of the Discalced Carmelites on 9^th Feb. 1932 at Carmel Hill Monastery, Thiruvananthapuram. After Postulancy, he was vested in the Holy Habit of our Order on 18^th August,1932 and took the new name as Br. Gerard Kunnumpurath OCD of Mary Immaculate. He made his Simple Profession on 20^th August, 1934 at Carmel Hill and Solemn Profession on 20^th August, 1937.

Br. Gerard faithfully served almost all the communities of our Province. The community members appreciated his sincerity and simplicity of life. He loved the Carmelite community and tried to make others happy in every way possible. He served the Diocese of Vijayapuram at Kuttikanam Mission from 1960 to 1962.

Br. Gerard used to take active part in the liturgical celebrations. He had received the ministries of Lector and Acolyte, according to the new rite. He had shown great interest in teaching Catechism and in giving talks to the members of the Carmelite Fraternity.

Br. Gerard was suffering from Cancer for the last four years. He was admitted in the General Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram on 30^th October, 1982. On Thursday, 25^th November, 1982, he was strengthened with the Holy Sacrament of the Church and passed away in the Lord in the hospital. His body was buried in the crypt of Carmel Hill Monastery on 26^th Nov. 1982.
